The lead-up to your book finally getting out into the world is always an anxious and exciting time. From the moment you started writing it, you’ve been wondering how it will be received. So far, your agent and publisher think it’s great, which is huge, but before it gets to the most important audience—readers themselves—you wonder how it will be received by that other important constituency: reviewers.
You never know for sure if a book will even get reviewed in the trade publications, not to mention how. But this week, The Price of Everything was reviewed in three important trade publications, and I’m delighted (and relieved!) at the reception.
Publishers Weekly writes, “McGoran conjures a vividly realized near-future dystopia and threads it with a sinewy crime caper. [His] nuanced characters are believable products of their denatured future and the suspenseful subterfuges they employ to survive keep the pacing brisk. It’s a page-turning thrill ride.”
Library Journal calls The Price of Everything a “fast-paced sci-fi thriller” and concludes, “The combination of climate apocalypse and political side effects, layered in levels of intrigue and mystery and leavened by romance, makes for an engrossing novel from McGoran.”
And Booklist writes, “A neatly crafted thriller with cyberpunk trappings and a grim, climate-disaster backdrop, McGoran’s latest is an entertaining read with a cinematic finish.”
There have been a couple of early non-trade reviews, too.
First Clue Reviews named The Price of Everything “Book of the Week,” writing that this “nonstop action sci-fi thriller delivers (no pun intended) all the goods. McGoran does a terrific job of worldbuilding, and readers will dig this blending of Blade Runner and John Wick. Is there a sequel coming?”
And Best Thriller Books writes, “It’s so pleasant to read an action thriller that peels more layers than the average narrative. …It’s an action thriller through and through, but it also punches above its weight to speak about the state of our world and where it’s all heading… I commend McGoran for creating an intelligent and effective thriller that walks a fine line between total sci-fi and ultra realistic narrative. The result is a moody and atmospheric thriller.”
I’m thrilled with this response so far. Now, I hope readers agree!
